"Root canals are generally performed by eliminating the deep cavity and tissue inside of an infected tooth (generally a result of cavity, fracture, or injury). These areas are distant and hard to reach within the dental tubular system; however, the process of disinfecting the root canal is extremely important for tooth preservation. The veterinarians manually cleans the infected area by scratching the interior of the canal and irrigating with a disinfectant. Rinsing solutions are also used but they are not fully effective in washing away the bacteria, which can penetrate deeper into the root. Now, researchers believe the bacteria in root canals can be ablated through the use of laser technology."

Terrier (12 month old) presented for a chronical  and painfull tumefaction in the projection area of the apex left mandibular canine tooth . 6 month ago this dog was treated for a base narrow dentition by tip resection of mandibular canines teeth to prevent the palatal trauma : disarming technique (medialy displaced lower canines impinging on hard palate) . Surgical crown reduction is normaly a sterile procedure but  when this resection was performed without  any vital pulpotomy the pulp of the left tooth was probably exposed and infected because the day of examination ( 6 months later) the Rhein probe is penetrating in the canal.

The dentin infected mud on the file : shavings are grey and sticky.

First decontamination :the canal is flushed by irrigating with hypochlorite and Hydrogen peroxide  alternatively to remove any remaining debris with rising root canal special needle (VMK-Endoneedle: very thin needle, 0,35 mm with a smooth tip. It can also be use for periodontal pocket irrigation).It is necessary not to jam the needle into the root canal in order to avoid direct injection of liquids into the apical bone, so insert the needle into the canal and when it stops, withdraw the needle by 1 mm and use a gently pressure on the syringue (never aspirate withe the syringue).

The following substances are used as root canal irrigants during the root canal procedure:

• -5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl)
• -6% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) with Surface modifiers for better flow into nooks and crannys
• -2% chlorhexidine gluconate
• -0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate plus 0.2% cetrimide (Cetrexidin)
• -17% Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)
• -hydrogen peroxide
• -framycetin sulfate (Septomixine)
